Sound Sultan

About 20 years ago, Nigerian creative artiste, Sound Sultan unleashed a narrative single entitled “Mathematics” (Jagbajantis). The work is a commentary on the deteriorating condition of the Nigerian state. The song which is perhaps Sultan’s magnum opus grew to become an anthem of sorts that still resonates years after its release.

“Mathematics” marked the beginning of Sound Sultan’s meaningful journey in the entertainment industry, and in fact shaped the tone of what his brand would later represent till date.

2018 is the 18th anniversary of the said song and Sultan’s run in the entertainment industry. By the laws of Nigeria, the rapper, singer, comedian and 360 entertainer’s career is now a youth and this significant landmark he celebrates with his ongoing live musical concert dubbed ‘Jungle Story’. The three-day event which made its debut last Friday at the popular art centre, Terra Kulture on Lagos Island was off to a laudable start.

On the inspiration behind the show, Sound Sultan had stated that #JungleStory is about a land that became jungle as a result of corrupt practices. According to him, “…motherland cast a spell on its people that who so ever indulged in corruption would be transformed into animals and over the years one transformation after the other it became a full-fledged Jungle”.

The conceptual show was politically-charged and embellished with astute stage plays that harmonise with the satirical and narrative nature of his music. The event kicked off at about 7:00 pm and spanned two hours, accommodating an array of consequential activities like spoken word, socio-conscious skits and musical performances.

Sound Sultan and his Jagbajantis Band held sway for the most part, delivering memorable moments to guests who also enjoyed intermissive performances by Seyi Shay, Harrysong, Comedians, Broda Shaggi, Mc Lively and Basket Mouth who participated in a play with Kate Henshaw.

The Jungle Story came to a close on Sunday, Oatober 14, 2018 when it presented its final show.
