The promotion of 112 senior police officers was during the week halted by the Police Service Commission (PSC). The Commission reached the decision during the its ninth plenary meeting which held in Abuja on Monday and Tuesday.

The PSC said the move was made over the failure of Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police, to comply with the directive of the Commission to attach the presidential approval for the creation of additional police zonal commands and departments “from where the vacancies for the recommended officers were harvested”.

On Wednesday, a court of appeal in Abuja nullified the recruitment of 10,000 constables carried out by Adamu. The court ruled that the IGP lacked the power to make the recruitment for the police force, adding that recruitment of officers was exclusively that of the Commission.

The commission also stood down the promotion of 13 commissioners of police, eight deputy commissioners of police, and 91 chief superintendents of police.

The PSC also announced that it approved the promotion of 175 senior police officers.

Said PSC: “The Commission promoted one Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Sanusi Lemu to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), to replace retired DIG Abdulmajid Ali,” it said in a statement.

“Also promoted were 167 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents, three Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents, two Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents, and four Inspectors to Assistant Superintendents.
