A ban may have been placed on Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).
‘Eternals’ is an American superhero film based on a Marvel Comics race of the same name.
The flick, which depicts a character as gay, is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney.
According to reports’ claim, the NFVCB, in a circular, directed cinema owners to yank the film, which was slated to debut on November 5, from screening schedules.
Claimed the report: “The Nigerian National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) under the leadership of Alhaji Adedayo Thomas has barred cinemas across the country from showing the latest Marvel superhero movie, ‘Eternals‘”.
Neither the NFVCB nor owners of some major cinemas in Nigeria were available to comment on the development.
Checks on the social media pages of the cinemas also showed that the film wasn’t listed among the titles coming soon.
An NFVCB ban would see Nigeria toe the path of countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar that banned ‘Eternals’ due to the inclusion of a gay superhero and his husband who shares a kiss in one scene.
The ‘Eternals’ gay couple constitutes the first openly gay characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
‘Eternals’ stars a cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.
In the film, an immortal alien race emerges from hiding to protect Earth from its evil counterpart, the Deviants.
