Nigeria was on Wednesday asked to draw lessons from the election by Scotland of a 37- year-old Humza Yousaf as the country’s first minister based on character, competence and capacity rather than ethnicity and religion.
Sir Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria, made this call in twits on his tweeter handle, stressing that in organised democracy like Scotland, credible leaders are voted into power based on character competence, capacity and compassion.
Humza, born of Pakistani parents, emigrated to Scotland in the 60’s, is from the ethnic minority and a muslim.
Obi therefore maintained that the only way for democracy to flourish and our society to progress is that Nigerians must rise above ethnicity, religion and sectarian politics in matters of governance.
Said he: “Scottish realty is instructive and presents us some lessons learned and missed opportunities”.
Emphasised the former Anambra State governor who stated this while reacting to the election of Humza Yousaf in a series of tweets via his Twitter handle page @PeterObi:
