Super Eagles depart Libya.
After the Super Eagles players and coaches had spent over 16 hours at a Libyan airport, they have headed back to Nigeria.
The Super Eagles players were held at the Al Abaq airport since Sunday evening upon arrival in Libya for the second leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match, following their 1-0 victory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Friday.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also launched an investigation into the “disturbing” treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at a Libyan airport.
The Nigerian team’s flight was diverted by the Libyan authorities instead of Benghazi, the location for the match.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Monday, announced the withdrawal of the Super Eagles from the qualifying match.
Reacting to the situation, the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) said the flight diversion experienced by the Nigerian national team was not “intentional”.
The LFF rejected claims of “foul play or sabotage”, arguing that their team faced a similar situation in Nigeria.
As at press time, the Nigerian team was on their way back to the country.
However, in a statement issued by CAF on Monday, it condemned the prolonged delay faced by the Super Eagles players and coaches at the Libyan airport, labeling it “disturbing”.

The African football governing body revealed that it had been in contact with Libyan and Nigerian authorities regarding the incident.
CAF said it had referred the matter to its disciplinary board for investigation, promising to take action against those responsible for violating its statutes and regulations.
Read the statement: “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations”.
