Sir Peter Obi.

Sir Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023 has come under criticism over his remarks about President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The Forum of Economic Rights Activists (FERA) made its reaction known in a statement issued on Friday where Moses Okino, the group’s president, disagreed with Obi’s assessment of the current administration’s economic efforts.

In recent interviews, Obi criticised Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the nation’s democracy was collapsing under his watch.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised Tinubu over the “ineffectiveness” of his economic policies.

However, Okino argued that Obi’s remarks did not accurately reflect the outcomes of ongoing reforms, particularly regarding the removal of petrol subsidies, which he noted was a key step in addressing systemic economic issues.

He also took exception to Obi’s stance on anti-corruption efforts, maintaining that progress had been made in areas the former governor criticised.

He dismissed Obi’s criticism as “amateurish” and “dishonest”, accusing him of deliberately distorting facts to fit his own narrative.

The group’s president urged Nigerians to critically evaluate political narratives and history as the country looks ahead to the 2027 general election.

Read the statement: “It is important for the electorate to make informed decisions based on a thorough understanding of both past leadership records and current political rhetoric.

“Our counsel to those who still believe the rants of the Labour Party’s candidate is for them to step back and critically assess the situation”.

Okino urged politicians to “engage constructively and transparently” with the public as the nation continues to navigate its political and economic challenges.
