The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State will reopen on Monday, after the completion of emergency repairs on the runway, the Federal Government has announced.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on April 18, announced the temporary closure of the airport after a sudden and major rupture appeared in the asphalt surface at a critical part of the runway.

Obiageli Orah, FAAN director of public affairs and consumer protection, said the repairs were initially planned to be completed later, but the work was swiftly done.

Said Orah: “The work was scheduled to begin on April 22 and conclude before reopening on May 6, 2025.

“However, rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and take-offs by the engineers working with FAAN.

“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time”.

The authority apologised for the inconvenience but assured the public that all actions were taken for safety, said Orah.
